Keeping Humans in the Loop:
Advancing Equity, Inclusion, and Responsible AI

Artificial intelligence and autonomous systems are increasingly embedded in critical infrastructures, digital platforms, and decision-making processes across sectors such as healthcare, education, finance, public safety, creative industries, and global communication networks. While these technologies present opportunities for innovation and efficiency, they also raise important questions about transparency, accountability, and the societal implications of highly automated systems.
Recent discussions surrounding autonomous surveillance technologies, algorithmic decision-making, generative AI, and emerging autonomous systems highlight the growing importance of meaningful human oversight in the design, deployment, and governance of AI-driven technologies. These conversations are particularly relevant in creative and cultural domains—including digital art, music production, social media platforms, and content creation—where AI tools increasingly influence how culture is produced, distributed, and monetized.
Ensuring that humans remain actively engaged in the development and oversight of intelligent systems is essential for promoting equitable outcomes, protecting creative ownership, and maintaining public trust. Human-in-the-loop (HITL) approaches provide mechanisms for incorporating human judgment, contextual awareness, cultural knowledge, and ethical considerations into AI systems that might otherwise operate with limited transparency or accountability.
The Equitable and Inclusive Computing (EIC) Workshop serves as a collaborative forum for researchers, educators, practitioners, artists, and students to critically examine the human role in emerging computational ecosystems. By bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives—from computing and information systems to creative arts and digital media—the workshop aims to advance scholarly dialogue and practical solutions that place human values, cultural expression, and diverse participation at the center of AI innovation.
